The melting point of S type is 133.8℃, [α]+156.57 (water).

Application in the pharmaceutical industry can be used as an intermediate of cefmetazole, vasodilator cyclic mandelic acid ester, eye drops of hydroxybenzazole, pemoline and the like, and can also be used as a preservative.

Production method 1. Using acetophenone, a byproduct of cumene phenol production, as raw material, dichloroacetophenone is obtained by chlorination, and then mandelic acid is prepared by reaction and hydrolysis with dilute alkali. 2. Benzaldehyde is used as raw material. Dissolve sodium cyanide in water, add benzaldehyde, slowly add saturated solution of sodium bisulfite under stirring, add crushed ice when adding to half, and separate the separated phenylacetonitrile layer from the water layer. The water layer is extracted with benzene, and benzene is distilled off. The residue is combined with the phenylacetonitrile layer, hydrochloric acid is added, and hydrolysis is carried out for 12 hours under cooling. Then heating to remove excess water and hydrochloric acid, cooling, filtering out the mixture of ammonium chloride and mandelic acid. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness, the residue was combined with the above solid and washed with cold benzene. Extracting with hot benzene, cooling, crystallizing, filtering, and drying the extractive solution to obtain mandelic acid with a yield of 50-52%. 3. Benzene-glyoxylic acid method.
